In such a case, the interpreter listens to the source language speaker and renders the message into a language common to all the other interpreters, who then render the message to their respective group of listeners in the language of the listeners.
For example, the speaker talks, then the first interpreter renders the message in English to every interpreter in the room, and then they proceed to render it to their target language groups in Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Cambodian etc.
Relay interpretation is used in exceptional occasions when it is much needed. It’s not the most recommended because it, obviously, takes more time and increases the risk of inaccuracy, omissions, additions, message distortions, etc., since most messages go through more than one interpretation in more than two languages.
LC understands why you’d have opted for relay interpretation for your work. That is why we employ a pool of highly skilled and professional relay interpreters who understand the preparation and effort required to deliver a relay interpretation assignment successfully.
