The Araucanian languages are a small language family of central Chile with its alternate names as Mapudungun; Araucano; Maputongo; Mapuche; Araucanian; “Auca”. and adjacent areas of Argentina. The number of speakers is about 200,000 in Chile and the population totals all countries is about 300,039. The Ethnic population is about 604,349 (2002). The number of speakers differs in terms of definition and research methods. There are about 240,000 speakers, with 200,000 in the Central Valley of Chile and 40,000 in several Argentine provinces, where a number of 150,000 people use the language often. The number of native speakers of Mapundungun/ Araucanian is somewhere between 240,000 and 700,000.
