Kayah/ Kayah Li belongs to the Sino-Tibetan language family and is spoken by about 590,000 people in the Kayah and Karen states of Burma (Myanmar) and is also a member of Karen branch. The language and people who speak it are known as Western Kayah, Karenni, Karennyi, Red Karen, Yang Daeng or Karieng Daeng. The name Kayah is a new name invented by the Burmese to tear them off from other Karen. Eastern Kayah is reported to have been spoken by 260,000 people in Burma and 100,000 in Thailand in 2000, and Western Kayah by 210,000 in Burma in 1987. The Western dialects are Yintale and Manu (Manumanaw in Burmese). There are contradictory reports of whether Yinbaw is Red Karen or Geko Karen.
